.
Minor manual edits have been made to enhance the lakes layer on Calvert Island by HAKAI SPAR.
4) DEM (Digital Elevation Model)
DEM was supplied by the TRIM dataset at 25 meter spatial resolution. Edits include resampling the 25 meters to 5 meters to improve the look by giving it a smoother appearance. A clip was used (using the land mask) to smooth the edges of the shoreline. Calvert Island was erased so the Hakai LiDAR dataset could be used to enhance the spatial resolution of the final product. The Hakai LiDAR data (2m spatial resolution) is from the November 14th data and requires further processing. Inaccuracies exist in the LiDAR based DEM and it should only be used for visualization. Updates in 2015 will allow for the publishing of a new DEM and therefore updated Hakai Terrain Relief basemap.
5) Hillshade
Hillshade model was developed in ARC desktop from the TRIM 25 meter model. A raster calculator was used to convert “no-data” to a value of 180 (flat land). A clip to the shoreline (land mask) was used to ensure no bleeding of no data would impact the look of the final basemap.
Hillshade for Calvert Island was conducted using the November 14th LiDAR based DEM (2m). Future enhanced DEM data will result in a new hillshade for 2015.
6) Bathymetry model and hillshade.
25 meter bathymetry model was resampled to 5 meters and raster calculator “no data” to “0” to fill any gaps and clipped to the “land mask“ layer. The TRIM based 25 meter model had a raster calculator to “0” to fill the gaps and a hillshade was produced. A clip of the 25 meter hillshade using the “land mask” produced a final product to be fused with the bathymetry model for all ocean areas.
Gamma corrected Orthorectified Elevation Tint Fusions were created by fusing the described hillshades with the DEM, applying a custom tint to the latter, separately for land and ocean hillshade-DEM pairs as per http://www.esri.com/news/arcwatch/0612/using-image-analysis-functions-to-display-layer-tints-on-hillshades.html. The same process was followed for the land component of Calvert Island separately. The resulting resolutions for the land and ocean Tint Fusions are:
- 25m for the ocean component
- 25m for the land component excluding Calvert Island
- 5m for the land component of Calvert Island
A summary of the Raster Data used for the Hakai Terrain Relief basemap (dated December 5th, 2014)
Thee sets of DEM / Hillshades were produced to cover the entire greater hakai study area.
TRIM based DEM + Hillshade – All land except Calvert / Hecate region.

2012 / 2014 LiDAR based DEM + Hillshade (dated November 14th– 2014) – All Calvert + Hecate areas. * Errors in the data. DEM needs work and should only be used for visualization. Updated expected by February, 2015.

3. Bathymetry (TRIM based) elevation model + hillshade. Covers all ocean areas.
This basemap can be downloaded and used offline on ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS App for iOS and Android, and ArcGIS Collector for iOS and Android.

",
